The Awakening :: essays research papers

In The Awakening Kate Chopin utilizes a few images and themes to uncover more prominent topics all through the book. The hero, Edna Pontellier, experiences a progression of â€Å"awakenings† in which she finds her freedom and aching for a real existence which is less adjusted. However Edna at last finds that autonomy and isolation come connected at the hip, and that the desires for ladies in the 1800’s clash with her craving to be a person. A few occasions and characters impact Edna’s arousing, for example, Robert Lebrun, Adele Ratignolle and even her few visits to Grand Isle. However there is one character who is by all accounts the most compelling in Edna’s improvement and that is Mademoiselle Reisz.      Mademoiselle Reisz is a whimsical and to some degree disliked more established lady yet additionally a phenomenal musician. She is unmarried, childless, and unattractive, dedicating all her an opportunity to her music. Indeed, even her living style uncovers her character; a condo above every other person, with a view, yet frequently obnoxious and cold. Mademoiselle Reisz fills in as a dream for Edna speaking to autonomy and opportunity, and she is in this manner a foil for Adele who speaks to everything a worthy lady would have been in the nineteenth century. Despite the fact that neither Edna nor Mademoiselle Reisz can truly profess to have been extremely attached to one another, Edna looks for her friendship as she seeks after her autonomy and is pulled in to Mademoiselle due to her unpolished way. Mademoiselle Reisz is the main character who is aware of Edna’s affections for Robert and along these lines fills in as a significant connection between the two cha racters. Mademoiselle Reisz likewise understands that Edna is the main visitor who appears to be truly moved by her music, made clear in an entry in which Edna first hears her play â€Å"Perhaps it was the first occasion when she was prepared, maybe the first run through her being was tempered to take a dazzle of the withstanding truth... she saw no photos of isolation, of expectation, of yearning, or of despair† (chap.9 pg. 33). In this light Mademoiselle Reisz fills in as a genuine friend for Edna and these subtleties bring these two differentiating characters together.      As Edna turns out to be progressively mindful of her sexuality and should be free she understands that Mademoiselle Reisz is the exemplification of masterfulness and female autonomy, one who lives in capricious detachment. Mademoiselle Reisz reveals to Edna that she should be fearless is she wishes to be a craftsman, that craftsmen must have a valiant and disobedient soul, â€Å"Courageous, mama foi! The valiant soul.

Persuasive Writing: Bio Chip Technology Essay

Unique This paper centers around the disputable subject of the human biochip through science and innovation. I don't talk about the ‘Mark of the Beast’ viewpoint or any strict side to the theme. A portion of the biochip’s first uses are investigated before a potential future situation is played out; a couple of purposes of concern are tended to and afterward you are acquainted with Professor Kevin Warwick. I at that point clarify how the biochip is being used today predominantly as a distinguishing proof gadget and what some conceivable future uses might be, for example, a wellspring of data. The paper closes with an examination of peoples’ sentiments concerning new innovation through time. Watchwords: biochip, Professor Kevin Warwick A large number of things are viewed as disputable: capital punishment, creature testing, appropriation, fetus removal, hereditary building, and cloning are just a couple of the numerous subjects out there that individuals contend about. The biochip is a regularly developing contention that is taking numerous logical and mechanical jumps. Despite the fact that the biochip has demonstrated valuable in helping researchers screen protein levels and root out carcinogenic cells in the human body, it has an alternate feature I will at present be concentrating on; as a recognizable proof and a potential data gadget. The principal use for the biochip was observing fisheries in the mid 1980’s; it immediately moved to labeling pets, baggage, and checking sent bundles. A few chips are as of now being used in children’s knapsacks and are an element on some mobile phones, which empowers guardians to know where their youngster is at some random point in time. Be that as it may, the genuine contention on this point comes in with people’s worry about Big Brother. There are numerous confusions made about the biochip; a few people may believe that in the event that they have one they can be found anyplace on the globe by satellite, every little thing about them can be discovered right away, and that they will be constrained by the chip by one way or another. These announcements are for the most part false. The chip is so little it is just ready to contain one alpha numeric arrangement of digits to recognize the holder of the chip; it doesn’t convey your name, your pin number, what vehicle you drive, your location or something besides the distinguishing proof number. It doesn’t have enough force or range to be perused or followed by satellite. It must be perused by a scanner and just from a separation of two to twelve inches. What's more, it not the slightest bit controls what individuals think or do; this worry primarily originates from intrigue scholars. Attempt to envision, you’re shopping with your children in an enormous store and you turn your back for one second. The before you know it, your most youthful kid is no longer with you. Through the terrible frenzy you register the way that there are several individuals around, and any of them could have taken your kid without even an interruption in their progression. Presently envision that as you entered the store, there were scanners set up at the passageway that checked everybody as they passed. Knowing this, you should simply caution security about your child’s nonattendance and they will ensure your kid is still in the store. What an alleviation realizing that your kid can be found anyplace that has a scanner to peruse a biochip. This situation is as yet a couple of decades later, yet observing the advantages of such innovation is simple. In any case, a few drawbacks should be thought about also. Let's assume you or your kid were abducted, what might prevent the criminal from evacuating the biochip themselves to shield you or your youngster from being found? To shield that from occurring, the biochip would need to be embedded under general sedation just to guard the chip from expulsion. However, this procedure in itself is another worry; numerous individuals don’t concur with the idea of being ‘tracked’ in any case; for what reason would them being oblivious as the chip was set cause them to feel any better? Despite the fact that numerous worries can be calmed by the way that no more data can be put away on the biochip than a recognizable proof number, who’s to state that will be the situation later on? With innovation blasting as is it, the following likely advance in the biochip’s innovation is to store more data on it. Before long, it may not be important to recollect your vehicle scratches, your driver’s permit, your government managed savings number, or your ATM card. In a little while it might be as simple as strolling into a space for the lights to come on, the TV to change channels, or the radio the change stations. We as of now observe unpretentious changes in the manner data is put away. Brilliant cards are utilized with greater consistency, there are contributes bosom inserts, pacemakers, fake appendages, and counterfeit retinas, even paraplegics have had silicon cerebrum inserts ready to control PCs. Educator Kevin Warwick of the University Of Reading, England is the principal human biochip embed beneficiary. â€Å"On 20 April 1998, Professor Warwick had a glass container around 23 millimeters in length and 3 millimeters wide†¦inserted in his left arm. The chip, related to PC hardware in his home, turns lights on and off when he enters and leaves (a) room, and gives him an expressed, running count of the mail in his email box. The chip only conveys a recognizing signal†¦but (it) is as yet a stage forward since his body has not dismissed the remote matter.† (Mamatas 2002). It might be one more decade before innovation like Professor Warwick’s turns into a regular thing for ordinary individuals, however it is anything but difficult to perceive how it might be as basic to us later on as phones and PCs are today. There are numerous utilizations and characteristics in a biochip and they are as of now generally utilized in an immense number of uses: following phones, labeling pets, checking waste yield in trash receptacles in the UK, and the pharmaceutical organizations are in any event, beginning to do inquire about with the biochip innovation to screen protein levels. The subsequent stage is by all accounts human biochip implantation. (Chu 2005) At the point when you look at the reluctance individuals felt at the idea of the government disability number when it was first presented in 1935, you can see the closeness in the worry individuals feel about the biochip innovation today. I accept the utilization of this innovation can be an incredible advantage for our general public and lifestyle regardless of what application is set to utilize. From recognizable proof to clinical research, the advantages of the biochip innovation far exceed the couple of potential drawbacks stressing individuals now. References Chu, Wai Lang (2005). The Oxford English Dictionary Asks Teens To Explain Current Slang Critical Linking, September 21

The Oxford English Dictionary Asks Teens To Explain Current Slang Critical Linking, September 21 Sponsored by Libby, the one-tap reading app from your library and OverDrive The venerable Oxford English Dictionary has launched an appeal to teenagers, hoping they can help it get to grips with slippery teenage slang such as “hench” and “dank”. Citing its aim to “record all distinctive words that shape the language, old and new, formal and informal”, the OED said that slang terms were “always challenging” for dictionary editors to track. Young people’s language today is “particularly elusive”, because terms change rapidly and communication methods such as WhatsApp and Snapchat have made it more difficult to monitor the changing vocabulary. Calling all kids and teens! Ian Buruma, under fire for publishing an essay by a disgraced ex-Canadian radio star, is no longer the editor of The New York Review of Books. Buruma had been on the defensive since last week, when the Review’s Oct. 11 issue was published with the theme, “The Fall of Men.” It featured a piece by Jian Ghomeshi, a former CBC radio personality ousted after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and assault. Ghomeshi’s piece enraged many, particularly women, and Buruma was scorned for allowing the venerable publication to give Ghomeshi’s views a platform. Welp. On Wednesday, Barnes Noble opened one of its prototype bookstores in Columbia, Md. The store, which is latest in a series of prototype locations, is 17,000 sq.-ft., down from a typical footprint of 26,000 sq.-ft. It will stock 35,000 titles and features contemporary design touches, including warm-hued oak book shelves, and USB and electricity ports at tables in the café area. At the center of the store are two large “book theaters” which offer customers a 360-degree, in-the-round browsing experience. BN plans to open five more prototypes before finalizing a concept in 12-18 months. Sign up to Today In Books to receive  daily news and miscellany from the world of books.

What Makes Something Go Viral Its All in the Science of Buzz

What is â€Å"buzz†? In our humble opinion, it’s the momentum of attention or excitement for something that is just so good that it gains currency as it passes from one person to another—just like a snowball increases its girth as it rolls down a hill, collecting layers of snow. We know it when we see it—better still, we can even feel it. It’s that ephemeral element that surrounds a hot new restaurant, a music album that critics fawn over, or the two-minute clip of a kitten that thinks it’s a dog (because we secretly endorse â€Å"adorable†). And if we pass the word of this cool new thing to our friends, even to one person, we’ve just made our personal contribution to buzz. So how does buzz begin exactly? Well, the easy answer is that it starts in our brains. New research is beginning to shed light on the exact areas of the brain involved in â€Å"ideas that become contagious, spreading like a virus,† writes Catherine Griffin, in her article â€Å"Brain ‘Buzz’: Scientists Discover How Ideas and Information Spread.† In the article, Griffin writes about how researchers at UCLA wanted to find out which areas of the brain activate when ideas go viral, versus when they, well, just don’t. With the help of some UCLA students, researchers conducted a study, in which they scanned the students’ brains using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). As the students were scanned, they watched television show pilots with a variety of plotlines. The students were then videotaped reviewing each pilot, either green lighting or nixing it. Then another group of students watched the videos from the first group, and rated each pilot based on what the first round of students had to say on tape. The results uncovered what could be described as the genesis of buzz. Students in the first group, who were particularly convincing in their videos, â€Å"showed significantly more activation in a brain region known as the temporoparietal junction, or TPJ, at the time they were first exposed to the pilot ideas they later recommended,† writes Griffin. But not only that, the increase in TPJ activation was also linked to the ability to persuade the second group of students to like what they liked. In other words, the especially persuasive students essentially infected the second group of students with their excitement about the pilots they liked. Tag! Now you’ve got it, too. Researchers referred to this phenomenon as the ‘salesperson effect.’ So what does all this mean? For one thing, the research findings can help to uncover why certain public health campaigns are more successful than others, how advertisements can engage people at a deeper level, and perhaps even lead to teaching methodologies that can help teachers reach their students more effectively, suggests Stuart Wolpert, in his article â€Å"How the Brain Creates the Buzz That Helps Ideas Spread.† Wolpert quotes senior research Matthew Lieberman, a Professor of Psychology, as saying: â€Å"Our study suggests that people are regularly attuned to how the things theyre seeing will be useful and interesting, not just to themselves but to other people†¦Were wired to want to share information with other people. I think that is a profound statement about the social nature of our minds. So what’s the next step? Now that researchers have mapped the parts of the brain that light up when someone thinks an idea, a song, or a video is really good—and can’t wait to share it—they would like to go one step further. They’d like to â€Å"forecast what ideas are likely to be successful and who is likely to be effective at spreading them,† according to one of the researchers, Emily Falk, who was quoted in Wolpert’s article. Here’s what we know to be true, which Lieberman summed up succinctly: â€Å"It’s not enough to have a product [we’ll include â€Å"service† here as well] that people should like.† You need to be able to get the word out into the marketplace, and you need to get people excited about it. So how does something go viral? Easy: all you’ve got to do is feel excited about something and tell a friend. It’s the beginning of buzz, and anyone can get that snowball rolling. The Ideal Health Care System - 1632 Words

Jamie Cairns The Ideal Healthcare System In order to keep costs low while retaining easy access and high quality of health care, the ideal health care system must provide a judicious system of coverage for all, regardless of income, without increasing system spending and debt while avoiding unnecessary and unreasonable enforcement and intervention by the government. In the interest of checks and balances, however, a certain level of government involvement is needed. While many American citizens remain uninsured through no fault of their own, others known as â€Å"free-riders† are uninsured by choice with the knowledge that even without insurance they will receive the health care that they need (Free ride). The resulting debt from these unpaid†¦show more content†¦The goal of the ideal healthcare system is to make the benefits of being insured equal to the monetary cost of coverage for the individual. Doing so will lead to an increase in the population of insured individuals over time, thus appropriating the debt accrued by the uninsured; this debt will further decrease as more and more individuals choose to become insured, therefore tipping the balance in their favor. This in combination with the resultant lower cost of medical expenses and influx of insurance payments are the key to keeping costs low in the ideal healthcare system. â€Å"Four components of access to care are coverage, services, timeliness, and workforce† (Access to Health Services). As previously discussed, the key component to coverage is a system of checks and balances when it comes to costs and benefits to both the insured patient and their health care provider. One of these balances vital to having quality and widespread access in the ideal healthcare system is government involvement in providing healthcare for low income families, those unable to work or those unable to afford healthcare. Health insurance coverage will have no regard to personal income; even the highest paid individuals have medical bills they may not be able to handle. The amount of those uninsured will be greatly reduced by the introduction of incentives as

Pablo Picasso Guernica vs. Theodore Gericaults Raft of...

For centuries artists have moved audiences through the use of pictures. As time progressed those images became more and more demanding of the viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo Picassos Guernica, created in 1937, is a great example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically packed artworks. Gericaults The Raft of the Medusa and Picassos Guernica are both horrifying accounts of the nature of men that aimed to alter a viewers political†¦show more content†¦This predominantly two-toned color motif allowed for more focus to be drawn to the most dynamic figures, which are the same humans Gericault wanted viewers to see and sympathize for. While Gericaults, Raft of the Medusa was essentially criticized for its lack of direct criticism of the event and more a display of the human element, it is this feature that made it characteristically romantic. Gericault took the national scandal out of the papers and turned it into a personal event for each of the passengers. Rather than depict the weltering bodies of the crew, he gave them more muscular frames in vigorous poses. Originally setting out to portray the event as nothing more than a visual truth, he shifted his focus to portray a greater truth of suffering. The suffering is reflected in the face of every passenger and it is the main focus of the piece than any other element. The Rafts theme of human suffering evoked empathy and compassion, which helped project the image beyond any hopes the artist could have held for the piece. This predominant focus on the human condition allowed a stereotypical Romantic piece. Another artist famous for highlighting the human condition was Spanish-born, Pablo Picasso. In 1936 the Spanish government commissioned Picasso to paint a feature piece for their international exposition in Paris at the peak of World War II. Picasso was unsure of what to paint until in 1937 when Nazi warplanes bombed the Spanish town of

Stem Cells Essay - 1746 Words

Introduction The use of stem cells can advance drug development, knowledge of disease, patience specific disease treatment, and can bypass the limits of mouse-models for research. According to the National Institute of Health (1), stem cells are unique in the following ways: they can divide and renew themselves for long periods, they are unspecialized, and they can give rise to specialized cell types. The uniqueness of these stem cells allows for the testing of new drugs, cell-based therapies and the study of human development including cancer research. Human stem cell therapies have been used for the treatment of neurological disease in human clinical trials such as Parkinson’s disease (2), spinal cord injury (3,4) stroke (5), and†¦show more content†¦Background The generation of stem cells from zygotes and blastomeres retain the ability to create all embryonic and extraembryonic tissues (13) these are deemed ‘totipotent’, while cells that generate embryonic and cannot generate extraembryonic tissues are deemed ‘pluripotent’. Induced cells that are in a differentiable state, pluripotent, are the cells chosen to advance medicine. Cells selected for induced pluripotency cannot be terminally differentiated, as these cells lose their ability to be developed into other cells types (14). Pluripotency can be induced by the study of embryonic stem cells. These cells express factors (Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, c-Myc), deemed Yamanaka factors (15) and described as such in this review. There are currently four main methods for delivering these factors including viral vectors, DNA-based induction, RNA molecules and recombinant proteins (fig 1.) (16,17). Fig 1. Induced pluripotent cells from somatic cells by transduction, DNA-based induction, RNA molecules and recombinant proteins, creates a reprogramming wave leading to cells with the potential to become many cell types (16). The equivalency of induced pluripotent stem cells and embryonic stem cells is variable but using screening techniques, bioinformatics assay, cells that are more similar to embryonic stem cells can be selected for cloning techniques (18,19). The Antilles Fragments of Epic Memory by Walcott

Maud is portrayed as nostalgic as she longs for the music and seasons of her homeland, ‘â€Å"I miss the light northern rain, I miss the seasons,’ / Maud moaned implying that the climate lacked subtlety†(48). This is an emotion that many wives of colonizers felt as they were torn from their home to follow their husband out of love and support. Her character is minor, but it symbolizes the dilemma that Walcott himself goes through. She has an attachment for her European customs and longs to return home, yet she has made St. Lucia her home. Walcott accepts the past for what it was—horrific, but he embraces the influences that have made him one of the â€Å"exotic hybrids† (â€Å"The Muse of History† 56). Maud is an exotic hybrid as she has adapted to the culture of St. Lucia by fusing it with aspects from her homeland. Ireland is her home, but so is St. Lucia. Walcott describes that there were many aspects of St. Lucia that Maud could do without such as, â€Å"moisture rotting their library†¦rain flies...the velocity of passenger transports† (61-62). Yet there are many things that she has grown to love: â€Å"[the] elate sunrise would flood Maud’s garden, pouring relentless / light in angelic lilies†¦Ã¢â‚¬ËœIt’s so still. Its like Adam and Eve all over,’ / Maud whispered, ‘Before the snake. Without all the sin’† (62-63). She is indeed a true citizen of St. Lucia as she complains about the tourists in the same way the locals do. There is also an interesting relationship between Helen and Maud.

Mtv Research Paper free essay sample

The first song that was played on MTV was called â€Å"Video killed the Radio Star†. It was sung by a group called The Buggles. This was a very popular song all over and it was deemed a good choice for the first song broadcasted. Many people also believed that the meaning of the song was that MTV, the new music video broadcasting station was going to destroy the radio. Some people thought that the song was performed live, but it was just a video. MTV was quite a big hit by the 1990’s. It was viewed in over 50 million American homes. It became a target for all advertisers because of the number of young viewers that watched MTV.The kids would beg their parents to buy the products they saw on the advertisements and it made out to be a good investment for advertisers. The attention and money that the advertisers brought in was good for MTV because they got more offers to get commercial time which means more money for them. Some people that were on MTV when it was in its first few years were Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Cranberries, and Nirvana. They helped to kind of kick off the show and set it up for successful years to come. There are also some big-named people who probably played music from that MTV which helped to jump start their career.Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Peter Gabriel, U2, and Duran Duran were some of the people that were all a part of MTV at one time. In a way, these people also helped MTV to get a good start too. The more big names that they brought in the more attention they got from viewers. This was good for the singers and MTV. The target audience that MTV chose was teens age 12 to 21. With this age group, they found that they got very good viewing rates. Artists whose songs were played on MTV found that the sales of their song increased. This is what gave advertisers the idea that they could do good business if they had an ad on MTV. With this targeted audience, they also found that their viewing rates continued to rise. Today they still target the same audience and they are still very successful in the way that they draw the audience. There have been a few changes in MTV since the start. They released a new logo after 30 years. It is not much different. It is just a little bit bigger and it is one color. The last was a mix between a few colors. The old one was designed by Frank Olinsky and it was a very big hit, but it was just time for a change. In 1986, the President and CEO, Robert Pittman left. There is no exact explanation why but he did. Over time, they started to show more reality shows than anything else. Some people liked the change to more reality shows but some people like the old school music videos all the time. There were some companies and investors that made it possible for MTV to even start. Warner Communications and American Express were big investors that helped in the starting of the show. Warner Amex was basically the main establisher and owner for about five years after the start. Then, in 1986, Viacom purchased MTV from Warner Amex. Now Viacom is the owner with all rights to MTV. There are other networks that MTV and Viacom own. They own VH1 that was released in 1985 and its purpose was to play adult contemporary. Then, in 1996, MTV2 was released to allow fans to see commercial free music videos. MTV (the original) became available in Manhattan and Los Angeles. Many people called this the second launch of MTV. They also own all Nickelodeon stations, Comedy Central, and CMT. This is not all; it is just a few that you may know. Although MTV has been very popular, it has also had a few controversial shows that some fans did not agree with. â€Å"Beavis and Butthead† was very controversial because some viewers felt that it was pointless and that the language was a bad influence for some of the younger audience that watched it. â€Å"Celebrity Deathmatch† was a part of this list because it made fun of the celebrities and it had bad language and violence. â€Å"16 and Pregnant† was another show that some people did not like because it could encourage some of the younger viewers to engage in sexual intercourse which is the problem with the people on the show.It is meant to deter kids from ending up like that but it only encourages some. â€Å"Jersey Shore† was the last show that people did not agree with. They believe that the people on the show are irresponsible and kids these days may think it’s cool and try to be like them. Over the years, MTV has had an impact on our generation, but also on our parents’ generation. A lot of younger teens’ parents that are around (14) grow up watching MTV. It is not the same now as it was then because of the popularity in different kinds of music over the years and they are now showing more reality shows.MTV also has an effect on its viewers. Most people that have ever seen MTV are probably hooked on it and they like to watch it. Also, the persuasion by friends to tell other friends to watch it because it is ‘cool’; and you aren’t if you don’t watch it. MTV has been very important over its years in various ways. It has brought a whole new way to experience music. Before MTV, you could only hear music over the radio, but when MTV aired, it played music videos, which was a whole new element to music over all. They have also helped lots of artists to grow and become more popular with just a few minutes of air time. This gas truly helped many people become more popular. With music videos, many people became more persuaded into buying the song even though they may not like the song. Even if they really like the video, they would still buy it because of the video and they weren’t paying attention to the song. It is very smart on the part of the broadcasters because they could just draw in an audience with an exciting video and you would think nothing of the song, just the video.

Business Ethics Reflection

Question: Discuss about theBusiness Ethics for Reflection. Answer: Introduction Ethical leadership is perhaps one of the mostly hardly available but majorly important business assets. This is something, which differentiates the working principle of one from another. Ethical behaviours are guided by some ethical rules and regulations that come in the form of ethical theories. Some of the most important ethical theories are such as Utilitarianism and consensus. Ethical theories do guide a theoretical guideline on the understanding of business processing. The applicability and the success of eh mentioned theories depend heavily on its feasibility to the practices (Crane Matten, 2016). The main purpose of this assignment is to put forward some reflective content on the consensus approach. The assignment also tries to judge the rightness of the applied act utilitarianism in the provided mini case study. Reflection Consensus is a dynamic way of selecting the best and the suitable out of the mass options. One of the simplest examples of such approach can be understood from the election scenarios where people generally make someone win by giving them bulk number of votes. However, consensus form of approach teaches on selecting the right candidate for the irrespective kinds of groups (Stanwick Stanwick, 2013). One of the examples of such incident did also occur in my life when I got a chance to vote for the General Secretary in my college. The voting was phenomenal from the perspectives of participants but was low in standard from the perspectives of consensus approach. This is because of the fact that the most of the participants did only vote favouring the popularity of the selected person for the post of general secretary (Barry, 2016). The results could have been different if the selection was made following the guidance of consensus approach. Moreover, consensus approach teaches on how to s elect the best person or a group, which is profitable for the entire humanity. The consensus approach educates on compromising for the betterment of others. This is why it indicates towards the selection of those only, which are good from the societal perspectives. Consensus approach is difficult to those who are corrupted or close to the corrupt people but no to those who want justice. The one incident that took place in my college did teach me may a thing about the reality of existing life and the scenarios of an ideal life, which could be attained with the application of consensus approach (Weiss, 2014). Effectiveness of the Application of act Utilitarianism The imaginary student response does evaluate the mini case study effectively in most of the cases. It shows the application of act Utilitarianism effectively in the answers. It is showing the positive approach in all the aspects as it supports tries to supports the views of both the Stephen and Ralph. It tries to look on the positive part of both the stakeholders by showing and making different analysis from different perspectives of evaluation (Jennings, 2014). It highlights a positive outcome from the beliefs of both Ralph and Stephen. Showing positive attitude towards the humanity is what Utilitarianism teaches. This is exactly what the imaginary responses have tried to find. In addition to this, it also includes some additional information, which is not relevant to the act utilitarianism theory. The answers however lacks in the complete adherence of the Utilitarianism theory. This is one of those points, which are lowering the standard of answers. Apart from this, it also include s the judgement of hypothetical decisions based on rule Utilitarianism, which could have taken place. This is another point, which violates the adherence of the Utilitarianism theory. The answers could have been better if it would have been around the act Utilitarianism only. However, the imaginary students went on to consider some other types of business ethics such as rule Utilitarianism (Hoffman, Frederick Schwartz, 2014). Missing Items Things, which are missing in the depicted answers is the complete adherence of the Utilitarianism theory. The answers have also included negative impacts of the case scenario, which should never been included while answering the content with the help of Utilitarianism theory. Moreover, the Utilitarianism theory does speak about the positive outcomes only. It rather believes in imparting positive outcomes, which could satisfy the soul of humanity. The unnecessary inclusion of the probable negative outcome of the actions is nothing but the violation of Utilitarianism theory (Hartman et al., 2014). Unnecessarily Included Item Things, which should not have been the part of the imaginary answers is the inclusion of judgement on the decision made by Ralph. The imaginary students tried to answer the decision of Ralph, which is n some other ways the following of rule Utilitarianism. Moreover, rule Utilitarianism also guides to the positive outcome but it builds up the answers based on positivity with the help of direct derivation of rules. The derivation of results with the help of derived rules is nothing but the following of rule Utilitarianism theory (DesJardins McCall, 2014). Concluson Business ethics are very important from an organizational as well as from societal perspectives. This is something, which guides to an utter following of ethical guidelines, which helps bring the happiness to all the surroundings. The business ethics are of several kinds such as Utilitarianism and Consensus. The consensus approach is more quality oriented, which seeks the betterment of the entire humanity. In course of this, it also selects the best option, which could bring happiness to all. On a same note, Utilitarianism teaches the importance of happiness in someones lives. Utilitarianism is of two kinds such as act Utilitarianism and rule Utilitarianism. This assignment generally covers the application of act Utilitarianism in the mini case provided. However, it also shows the application of rule Utilitarianism in some part of the imaginary student response. Moreover, the morale of the assignment was to establish the importance of business ethics in the modern day activities. The following of ethical theories construct the foundation of leadership in organizations. Ethical guidelines are important to have streamlined business in accordance to the betterment of humanity. Post-Colonial View on Things Fall Apart free essay sample

Chinua Achebe is a novelist specializing in African literature, and this essay deals with the themes regarding colonialism in one of his many novels. In particular, the Igbo people in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart have their beliefs undermined by the British. As such, their ideals are viewed as savage and uncivilized, which caused a divide among the Igbo people. A useful theory to analyze the theme of a changing society is the post-colonial theory, which deals with the abnormal alterations that a society experiences because of an outside source, also called a ‘colonial power’. Post-colonial literary criticism is a useful theoretical tool to analyze the fall of indigenous society as depicted in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. In particular, the theoretical concepts of the process of colonization from the perspective of the colonized, the psychological impact colonization has on the Igbo people, and the Indigenous resistance to colonization are relevant to the analysis of the fall of indigenous society in Achebe’s seminal novel. We will write a custom essay sample on Post-Colonial View on Things Fall Apart or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To begin, colonization refers to the act of establishing colonies. This is mainly done to expand the territory of a certain nation, increase their own resource supply, and find new resources in the land being conquered. Colonization may have a positive effect on the colonizer, but the process of colonization typically affects the indigenous population negatively. Colonization causes change, which usually takes the form of whatever the colonizer believes to be correct without considering the ideas of the indigenous people who are in some cases treated like livestock. The greater the difference between the colonizer and the colonized, the greater the change that occurs from the perspective of the colonized. Once a society has been completely altered, the indigenous people not only begin to experience changes to their lifestyle, but also a change in the way they view the world. The novel Things Fall Apart describes the Igbo society before and after the British arrives. The first part of the novel deals with the tribal lifestyle of the Igbo people, which is the author’s way of showing the culture of the Igbo people from their own perspective. The Igbo people have been long time practitioners of their faith, with the next generation following the footsteps of their forefathers. Their culture and view of the world remains unchanged until the British arrive. During Okonkwo’s seven year exile from Umuofia, not only does his own village begin to change, but the neighboring villages appear to be changing as well. Due to the technological advancements occurring in Europe, the Igbo people are helpless against the British missionaries who arrive, as explained by the quotation, â€Å"Have you heard, asked Obierika, ‘that Abame is no more? †¦ ‘Abame has been wiped out,’ said Obierika (119). † The quotation reveals that the Igbo people are beginning to realize that they must either adapt and accept the foreigners or risk becoming completely annihilated similar to their fellow tribesmen from the village of Abame. It is evident that the goal of the colonizer is to bring change to the nation being o ccupied, but these changes often bring chaos to the indigenous people’s way of life, which in turn can alter the way their society functions. Secondly, the mentality of the colonizer and the colonized differ significantly. While the colonizer believes that he is bringing civilization to a society in which he deems â€Å"barbaric†, the indigenous people view the colonizers as a threat to their lifestyle and, as such, often look down on the beliefs of the foreigner. After living a certain lifestyle for an extended period of time, a sudden change in lifestyle abnormally envelops not only a society as a whole, but the individuals who live in that society. The psychological state of the indigenous people worsens due to the forced ideas of the colonizers mixing with their own, which can cause a rift in their thinking. A decision has to be made eventually; however, the colonizer typically tries his hardest to prevent them from making what he believes is the â€Å"wrong† decision. Although the colonizer appears to be helping the indigenous people, his true intentions are all but innocent. Due to their technological disadvantages, the colonizers have an advantage over the indigenous people, causing the previous existing people to feel undermined. Even after the colonizers eave, the colonized people continue to bear the scars left behind by the colonizers, as stated by Hayes who argues that, â€Å"Post Colonial Theory recognizes the trauma resulting from the alienation of indigenous people from their own land, even after achieving independence† (Hayes). Colonization leaves behind permanent psychological damage, even long after independence has been obtained. Moreover, the psychological impact is also depicted in Things Fall Apart. When the missionaries from Britain arrive in Nigeria, the Igbo people are amused at first when they first hand witness a â€Å"white man†. However, the one of the spiritual leaders in the Igbo clan who is known as the Oracle warns the people that â€Å"the strange man would break their clan and spread destruction among them (120). † This warning foreshadows the events that follow, and the Igbo people begin to feel inferior to the British colonizers after becoming aware of their destructive capabilities which were mainly due to their technological advancements. The missionaries who arrive also spread Christianity to the people. Those with power in Igbo society are not associated with any of the early converts. However, the â€Å"osu† or outcasts quickly join the new religion because the culture practiced by the Igbo do not accept them, and they are therefore easily swayed by the words of the foreigners. Although Okonkwo is a man of power in Igbo society, his son Nwoye is fascinated by the preaching of the missionaries. Eventually, Nwoye decides to cut his ties with his father as evident in the following exchange, â€Å"How is your father? Obierika asked, not knowing what else to say. I don’t know. He is not my father, said Nwoye unhappily (124). Colonization has impacted the Igbo people negatively and their original society has begun to diminish, starting in the second part of the novel Things Fall Apart. Finally, although colonization may have psychologically destabilized the indigenous way of thinking, there is often a handful of individuals who firmly hold onto their beliefs regardless of the situation. It is those people who typically want to restore their nation to the state that it was before being colonized. Due to their passionate desire to bring their nation back to its former glory, resistance against the oppressors is their way to show their dedication. Unfortunately, many forms of resistance typically fail due to various reasons, with some being more preventable than others. One such reason could be that violence plays a large role in fighting against oppressors, which eventually leads to either success to the indigenous people should they succeed, or harsh punishment if they fail. The risk factor involved in this is one that shouldn’t be viewed at lightly and thus the majority of the colonized people do not actively engage in resistance. As a result, resistance doesn’t happen as often as it is planned due to the risk involved. Furthermore, the indigenous people in Things Fall Apart attempt to resist the British both before and after they make their colonial presence in Nigeria. Prior to the arrival of the British missionaries, a lone man riding what the Igbo people called an â€Å"iron horse† appears. Due to his strange appearance, the people in the clan decide to kill the man, â€Å"†¦ and they killed the white man and tied his iron horse to their sacred tree because it looked as if it would run away to call to man’s friends† (120). Soon after, more British people begin to settle in Nigeria and preach their religion to the Igbo people. This event causes the British to establish a colonial presence in Nigeria. At the end of the novel, Okonkwo’s rage gives him an incentive to start a revolution by calling his people to the market place. Okonkwo’s goal is to persuade his people to start a war against the British, firmly believing that his people will follow him to fight the oppressors. After a messenger arrives, Okonkwo decides to initiate the fight, and successfully draws â€Å"first blood†. As Achebe writes, â€Å"That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drove him to kill himself; and now he will be buried like a dog† (178-179). This quotation describes Okonkwo’s disappointment after realizing that his fellow clansmen have changed, losing their sense of patriotism along the way. In conclusion, the points above illustrate the fall of indigenous society in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart using post-colonial literary criticism. Colonialism is typically viewed as an event of the past. However, although signs of colonialism are not as evident in the modern world, the after effects of a previously colonized nation continue to exist. For instance, the Tutsi and Hutu tribes from Rwanda were brought closer together because of the European colonizers. Prior to their arrival, the two tribes could be considered two different, rival nations with a different set of rules and culture. The political devastation caused by the Europeans due to their colonial presence in Africa, â€Å"also involved ethnic tension and violence due to colonialism exists because of poorly drawn international boundaries† (â€Å"Effects of European Colonialism in Africa†). However, the Europeans had little concern for the rivalry between the two tribes and so Rwanda was founded. Unfortunately, this caused a massive genocide in 1994, which killed approximately one million people. Thus, the act of colonialism has always benefitted the colonizer, and the indigenous people are left with the option to either adapt or risk elimination, which is evident even after independence has been achieved as proven using Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart as an example. Islamic Feminism as an Umbrella for Different Tendencies Research Paper

Islamic Feminism as an Umbrella for Different Tendencies - Research Paper Example Awde (2005) believes that Islamic feminists may or may not share the main tenets of Western feminism. What Feminists believe Feminists generally criticize a number of discriminatory Islamic rules. A large number of these feminists formulate their criticisms from within the Islamic framework. They profess a double allegiance, to Islam and to women rights. Doorn-Harder(2006) states that feminists generally express the belief that the divine message of Islam is inherently egalitarian. Yet, its egalitarian content has been partly or wholly destroyed by human interpretation. Souaiaia(2007) states that feminists, however, do not all think the same way or even about the same kind of problems and the immensely diversified topics under feminism are self-speaking proof of this. The issue of marriage and divorce, the veil and its necessity as an adornment for Muslim women in order to protect them from causing seduction or discomfort to the society in general, the struggles that women have faced over centuries and the pain that they have borne to make their place in the mainstream market are just a few of the issues that feminists deal with. In the pre-Islamic era and where the woes of polytheism and polyandry prospered, women were gravely burdened by highly discriminated societal views. Rituals like the killing of young girls at birth, restricting of women to household chores, giving women no right over property or land and depriving them of the most essential human rights were some of the major problems. Souaiaia(2009) claims that feminists over the years have raised questions on traditions such as the Crimes of Honor and inform the law upholders how for honour's sake; the protectors of women take away their lives and are unjustly supported by our religious scholars. According to Wilson (2011), the helplessness of a woman in a male-dominated society is a major bone of contention for feminists; a woman is merely a puppet whose strings can be tightened, loosened or even cu t by her guardians.

Career Path Planning Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Career Path Planning Report - Essay Example Designing and implementation of software refers to the task of software development. This has grown to cover web development aspects, interface design, issues concerning securities, mobile computing among others. Most graduates usually follow this career path. Despite having taken a degree being sufficient to venture into this career, some graduates decide to undertake a master’s degree (Lopatto, 2004). Career opportunities is provided in various settings such as software companies, computer services companies, industries, health sectors, banking among other sectors. Coming up with new ways of computer use requires one to come up with various innovations in computer technology applications. This pathway includes graduate work that is advanced, positioning one in an industrial research or research in a university. Coming up with effective ways in solving computing problems needs one to apply knowledge and theory in computer science to come up with solutions to computational problems. This needs graduate work to PhD level, later positioning in Research University or development laboratory or industrial research (Goode, 2008). On completion of my computer science course, two career jobs of my choice are web designer and software tester. Having gained all the skills and knowledge over the years of my degree course, it would be easier to handle the two careers in the real life situation. As a software tester, one is engaged in quality assurance level of development of software and deployment. The person is involved in conducting both automated and manual software tests to ensure their fitness for the purpose they are meant for. This career of software testing involves software and system analysis to eradicate risks and prevent other software issues. The software tester role is tied to development of software systems and other technical products such as electronic goods, vehicles, healthcare and defense.
